So Netflix announced all 70 original films being released in 2021. I'm probably the most excited about Lin-Manuel Miranda's adaptation of the musical Tick, Tick... Boom! And while Netflix doesn't always knock every single original film out of the park, they are pretty good at making a wide variety of films so that there's something for everyone. My favorite Netflix films from 2020 were A Secret Love, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and American Murder: The Family Next Door. What was your favorite?

It's Friday and there are some great new releases to watch this weekend! The fourth season of Search Party is now out on HBO Max. If you're a fan of dark comedy, I highly recommend checking it out. I cannot wait to binge it! Also WandaVision, the first MCU series to air on Disney Plus, premiered two episodes today. The last MCU film came out 1.5 years ago, so hopefully WandaVision can fill the giant MCU void in my life. Now if only I could convince my boyfriend to watch it with me...Anyway, enjoy!

This week I am finally watching The Flight Attendant (HBO Max) and it's gotten me on a mystery kick! Next up on my list is Lupin (Netflix). Lupin is a new French crime thriller that Netflix projected would reach 70 million households in its first 28 days! (For reference, The Witcher was watched by 76 million in 28 days.) Up until now Money Heist, a Spanish crime show, was Netflix's most popular non-English language series. Time to start binging!

Okay, so streaming has spoiled me. Waiting through Bob's Burgers (Fox/Hulu) two month winter hiatus is the absolute worst. Luckily Bob's Burgers creator Loren Bouchard also created the delightful musical animated series Central Park (Apple TV+), which you should check out. Plus the first two episodes of The Great North, produced by Bouchard, are now on Hulu. I watched both episodes last night and found it very charming (basically Bob's Burgers set in Alaska). And the voice cast (Nick Offerman, Jenny Slate, Will Forte) is phenomenal. |

Like many folks, I've been using my extra time at home to catch up on shows I'd never watched before (like all seven seasons of The West Wing.) So let's take a look at some cult classics on Netflix that you may have been putting off. On the comedy front I recommend the British sitcom The IT Crowd or the classic sketch series Monty Python's Flying Circus. Looking for something a little more unsettling? Welcome to Con Woman Wednesdays! Movies and shows about con women are very hot right now! On Friday the comedy thriller film I Care a Lot starring Rosamund Pike and Peter Dinklage hit Netflix; it's about a woman who acts as a legal guardian for elderly folks and steals from them. Today the new Netflix original series Ginny & Georgia dropped and it's about a young mother and her teenage daughter (and son) moving to a quirky New England town...except the mother has a shady grifting past. Los Espookys (HBO Max) - a hysterical Spanish-language comedy about a group of friends who create a business around their love of horror. 2. I'm predicting that the upcoming series Shadow and Bone (April 23), based on the fantasy novels by Leigh Bardugo, will be one of the most watched and talked about shows this spring. Stars like Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Pink and Willie Nelson all pay tribute to the generous, hilarious and iconic country music legend. And speaking of music legends, the fantastic Tina Turner documentary Tina is also available on HBO Max! And on the extreme opposite end of the spectrum, I noticed the TV series adaptation of Stephen King's Creepshow is now finally available on Amazon Prime. I'm a huge horror fan and I've only seen a couple episodes, but I loved it and can't wait to finish the first season! |

Not a lot of notable releases this weekend, except for the new anthology horror series Them (Amazon Prime). Or, if you're super curious after years and years of delays and reshoots, The New Mutants lands on HBO Max tomorrow. (Spoiler: it's not good.) So instead let me recommend something excellent: check out the first two seasons of Pose on Netflix. The final season premieres May 2 on FX, so you have a little time to catch up. While occasionally heartbreaking to watch, Pose is an absolutely fantastic show about the drag ball culture scene in the late 80s/early 90s. One of the few shows to bring me to tears in 2020. Last night I binged the Netflix docuseries This Is a Robbery: The World's Biggest Art Heist (Netflix), a four part series about the 1990 unsolved Gardner Museum theft in Boston. The thieves stole thirteen pieces, none of which have ever been recovered, and it's still considered the largest art theft of all time. And if you've already watched it and are looking for more fascinating tales from the art world, I recommend checking out the documentary film Art and Craft (Amazon Prime) about the legendary art forger Mark Landis. |

The other day I was skimming the "hidden gems" film list on Netflix and realized most of them were actually popular movies. So here are some lesser known films on Netflix that I really enjoyed: if you want something funny and moving, Taika Waititi's Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an excellent watch. If you enjoy films based on true events, The Founder shows how McDonald's came to be an empire at the hands of Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), which I found truly fascinating. The final third season of Hulu's comedy Shrill, starring Aidy Bryant, is out today! If you've been sleeping on Hulu's comedy shows, that's definitely a mistake. I've talked about my deep love for the middle school set series PEN15 before, but I also highly recommend you check out some past Hulu shows like Difficult People and Casual (both of which I adored). If you like historical comedies The Great is extremely entertaining. Disney's new live action villain film Cruella, starring Emma Stone, hits movie theaters and Disney+ this Friday. Just like with Mulan and Raya and the Last Dragon, if you want to watch Cruella on Disney+ this weekend you'll have to cough up $30. If you don't want to pay the $30 fee, Cruella will be available to all Disney+ subscribers on Aug. 27. Since my local movie theaters have reopened, I might go see Cruella on the big screen. I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson (Netflix) is already back with more ridiculous sketch comedy skits and Atypical (Netflix) returns Friday.
The best TV this week is coming from overseas: the second season of the British series This Way Up hits Hulu on Friday. And from New Zealand, the first season of Wellington Paranormal (a spinoff from What We Do in the Shadows) is finally on HBO Max on Monday! |

Who's excited for Black Widow?? It's been two very long years since the last Marvel movie came out and I could not be more thrilled to see Black Widow in theaters tomorrow. If you're not quite ready to return to theaters, you can watch the film at home on Disney+ for $30.
If you're looking for something free to watch, the second part of the Fear Street trilogy is out on Netflix today. But if horror isn't your thing, I recommend checking out In a World..., a charming comedy film from 2013 now on Hulu.

Yesterday the Emmy nominations for 2021 dropped and I'll admit that I have mixed feelings about awards shows in recent years. The Handmaid's Tale nabbed 10 noms for acting alone and The Crown landed 9 acting noms. You can't deny the performances on both shows are excellent. But frankly neither show even cracks my Top 20 list. At the end of the day, always remember to watch what makes you happy!

Today is certainly a wild day for new TV series. The Turner & Hooch series premieres on Disney+ and yes, it is a continuation of the Tom Hanks buddy cop film from 1989 following Hanks’ children present day after his death. What has everyone been watching lately? I’ve been rewatching all the Marvel films before Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings comes out in September. And next on my list is Heist (Netflix) a true crime docuseries about famous heists; Netflix does a great job with their docuseries, so I'm definitely excited to check it out.

The Suicide Squad hits HBO Max and theaters tomorrow! Remember, you only have one month to watch it at home. (Also a reminder that you have until Aug. 15 to watch the new Space Jam!) The Suicide Squad is technically a sequel to the painfully awful Suicide Squad (2016), but this standalone film directed by Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is wildly entertaining.

Great news! You can finally watch Cruella on Disney+ without the $30 fee. I'm not the biggest fan of Disney's live-action adaptations, but I caught Cruella in theaters and found it quite enjoyable.

Dune is finally here! The sci-fi epic, directed by Denis Villeneuve, has a star-studded cast including: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson...and I could keep going.
The film will be available in theaters and on HBO Max at 6p ET tomorrow. Keep in mind that this film is technically Dune: Part One. So if a sequel isn't ordered, the story won't exactly have a satisfying ending. Still CNET's review found the film to be a deeply weird, yet thrilling movie experience. Count me in!

It’s a big weekend for new movies! HBO Max has King Richard, a biopic about Venus and Serena’s father Richard Williams (played by Will Smith). And Netflix has the film adaptation of the musical Tick, Tick...Boom! (one of my favorite musicals), with Andrew Garfield as the lead. Both are getting great reviews and you can’t go wrong with either.
On the TV front, the shows are a bit lackluster. Netflix has the live action series adaptation of the beloved Cowboy Bebop anime, though reviews are disappointing. Today’s also the premiere of The Wheel of Time (Amazon Prime), the new fantasy series based off of the novels.

Happy Friday! Big weekend for movies! If you didn't catch Uncharted (an adventure film based on the video game series and starring Tom Holland) in theaters, it's now on Netflix. It didn't get the best reviews, but I really enjoyed it!

Film lovers will want to check out the new docuseries The Last Movie Stars on HBO Max tomorrow. Directed by Ethan Hawke, the series follows the lives and marriage of actors Paul Newman and Joanna Woodward.
I also finally watched Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey, the docuseries on Netflix about the FLDS. The material is heavy but really well done!

Lastly, Netflix has The Gray Man, an action film directed by the Russo brothers and starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. Reviews find it bland, but the talent involved might make it worth checking out.
